The air is getting colder, and the leaves are changing colors — it’s officially the start of fall! This means it’s time to break out the sweaters and drink in those delicious autumn flavors. Fall beverages are back in season, and we have some fantastic seasonal recipes that you can make right out of your home — no crowds, no lines, or wait times.
Let’s get started!
1. S’mores Hot Chocolate
This is a simple childhood recipe with a playful twist. This versatile recipe can be vegan-friendly and gluten-free with a few substitutions of ingredients.
Using the ever-so-handy microwave, melt the marshmallows before coating the mugs’ rims and dipping them in graham crackers. Prepare the hot chocolate separately, adding cocoa powder, sugar (or Stevia), and chocolate syrup. Once poured in the mugs, top them with a few marshmallows and additional chocolate syrup and graham crackers (if you’re feeling extra sweet).
2. Homemade Apple Cider
The ultimate and most classic of cold-weather treats. A simple yet delicious recipe that’s as colorful as fall leaves.
This hot cider recipe can be made on the stovetop in a stockpot filled with apples, oranges, cinnamon, cloves, and a little nutmeg, along with water for the base. Once combined, put the cider on high heat until it reaches a simmer before reducing it to medium-low and simmer for 2 hours. Mash the ingredients with a wooden spoon to release the flavors after they soften. Strain the juices from the solids of the apples and oranges (perfect for smoothies) for 5 minutes.
Once strained, mix in a sweetener of your choice for taste and serve this homemade apple cider warm!
3. Snickerdoodle Latte
This quick and easy recipe is rich, creamy, and spiced to perfection for coffee lovers.
Using an espresso maker, make a ½-cup of strong dark roast coffee followed by steaming 8 ounces of milk in the microwave. Stir the steamed milk, molasses, cinnamon, and nutmeg in the mug until dissolved. Lastly, pour the coffee in the cup of spiced milk, add a little whipped cream for fun, and enjoy!
4. Autumn Tea
For those who enjoy a good tea to keep warm in the cooling temperatures, autumn tea from Simple Loose Leaf Tea Company will keep you warm and make you nostalgic for crisp leaves, pumpkins, and pies.
Squeeze 4 or 5 tangerines and combine the juice with water, a small cinnamon stick, and 1 or 2 cloves. Bring to a boil, remove it from the heat, add a teaspoon of pure black tea, and steep for 10 minutes. Strain the tea and pour yourself a cup of fall.
5. Chocolate Coffee
This final recipe is Taste of Home’s coffee recipe with a chocolatey twist for coffee drinks with a sweet tooth. Nothing says fall like a drink recipe that combines hot chocolate and coffee.
You’ll need sugar, baking cocoa, water, vanilla extract, salt, heavy whipping cream, and strong brewed coffee or whole milk if you prefer. Whisk the sugar, cocoa, and water in a large, heavy saucepan on medium-low heat for at least 35 minutes until it forms peaks and resembles a thick fudge sauce. After removing the pan from the stove, mix the vanilla and salt and then transfer the mixture to a bowl. Let it refrigerate for two hours.
After two hours, beat the fudge-like mixture before adding in the whipped cream and mixing it in. Once completed, add a ½-cup of chocolate cream to the cup of coffee or milk and stir. Now you are ready to serve!
