Household Chores to Surprise Your Valentine With

by Bill Welles

Valentine’s Day is intended to be the day where you celebrate that special someone in your life. However, with the events of the past year and the amount of time we’ve all spent at home, the relationship we have with our household chores has taken precedence.

While we don’t recommend forgoing a bouquet of roses, a box of chocolates, or a fancy dinner, a short break from the household chores might be the refreshing gift your valentine desires most.

Are there any chores your spouse is particularly unfond of? If so, this is the time to surprise him or her and take care of the most dreaded tasks. If you loathe doing the dishes, taking out the trash, or folding laundry, use February 14 to take the day off from your least favorite chores.

Make a list of chores for your partner to do throughout the day. This shows communication and compromise, even it is just for this one special day. And once it’s time to join each other for a romantic celebration at night, you can do so knowing your house is spotless. That alone is worth celebrating.

An Act of Service

We all show and receive love in our own way, and on Valentine’s Day, those differences are reflected in the gifts we choose for our significant others. While it’s common to buy jewelry, clothing, or maybe spend a romantic weekend away, sometimes, the best gift of them all is an act of service.

Everyone has their own love language, but an act of service is one way to make your loved one feel appreciated. It can be anything where you take care of the daily responsibilities, and cleaning is a great place to start. Actions really do speak louder than words, so grab a broom, a mop, or any other cleaning tool and take care of the household chores for the day.

The impact of cleaning and sharing housework can have a big impact on your relationship, so put your best foot forward and surprise your special someone with a chore-free day this Valentine’s Day.

Cooking

You probably aren’t making a reservation at a crowded restaurant this year, so staying in and surprising your spouse with a homecooked meal is the perfect chore to double as a thoughtful gift. Buy the groceries, prep the meal, and give your loved one the chance to get off their feet while you cook dinner.

They say the way to a person’s heart is through their stomach, so a well-planned, thoughtful meal is the perfect way to show your love. You can still dim the lights, pour some champagne, and play a little music—in fact, these things all go better when a homecooked meal, anyway.

Perhaps a comforting Bolognese or a shrimp scampi for your Valentine’s menu? No matter what you serve, a night without cooking is a treat for your loved one.

Dishwashing

But once mealtime is over, you’re left with everyone’s most dreaded chore—the dishes. Scraping dishes, rinsing dishes, drying dishes, loading the dishwasher—it’s not pleasant no matter how you slice it. Because of this, taking care of the stack of dirty dishes is a great act of service.

Doing the dishes is a nightly battle, so giving your spouse a break is much-needed relief. Load the plates, utensils, cookware, glassware, and anything else while your significant other enjoys his or herself. And don’t stop there—while you’re at it, might as well wipe down the counters, the stovetop, and mop the kitchen floor. The job isn’t complete until the entire kitchen is spotless.

While the dishwasher is running, this is a chance for your spouse to pour a second glass of champagne or slice into that chocolate cake. Knowing the kitchen is clean and free of mealtime messes will allow you both to unwind and enjoy the night without any worry.

Take Out Trash

It’s simple enough, but taking out the trash without being asked is a true sign of love. You're bound to have some funky garbage after that meal, so rush it out back before it starts to stink up the kitchen you just cleaned.

And if you have a trash compactor, now’s a good time to give that a clean as well. Make sure the trash is emptied and wipe down the cabinet door, the handle, and anything else that could be full of germs from contact with your after-meal garbage.

Now, if you lug the full-size trash cans out to the curb, that will score you some serious brownie points.

Laundry

Another of the major chore groups, laundry day is never a walk in the park. Instead of letting the hamper overflow or walking past the pile of dirty clothes on your bedroom floor, take it upon yourself to do the laundry.

This can be one of the first chores you do in the morning to begin your day of cleaning. Grab the dirty clothes basket and some detergent and get to it. Be sure you’re sorting your clothing appropriately by color and running the correct temperature setting.

Once your clothes are washed and dried, you might as well do the ironing while you’re at it. No one likes creases in their clothes, so press out all those wrinkles so you can look your best on Valentine’s Day. Neatly fold your garments and put them away so your bedroom stays free of any clutter.

Time to Celebrate

You are not bound by this list. There are countless small chores you can do to show your valentine you care. Whether you make the first cup of coffee for breakfast in bed, vacuum, clean the bathroom, take care of some yard work, you can’t go wrong. We all love a day off, so taking the lead on any chore is the perfect way to celebrate Valentine’s Day.
